Early Herrmann

I knew I'd eventually getting around to putting up some Bernard Herrmann... to start out, I'm featuring his debut work with Orson Welles.

Kane

Kane was the film debut of both Welles and Herrmann - and while there are lots of recordings of music from it (Herrmann's own suites on London Phase 4 and Charles Gerhardt's great recording on RCA to the recent Joel McNeely on Varese), I'm a bit partial to this version... probably this and the McNeely re-recording combined would be as close to a complete version on record/disc as you can get.

Ambersons

The other reason for featuring this version of KANE is to bookend the next Welles/Herrmann film, THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS. If you see the film, you'll notice that Herrmann's name doesn't appear in the credits - he took his name off of the film after tampering was done to the film and his score. This disc represents a complete reconstruction of Herrmann's score for the film, restoring selections that didn't end up in the film.
